St Georges Day

The Flag of St George, flew proudly from the top of the Church Tower . Then we had a magnificent peel of bells to remind all that our service was due to start- we were joined by many civic dignatories, and supporters but above all our beavers, cubs, scouts, explorer scouts and leaders came in their droves to celebrate St Georges Day .

We were greeted by a huge smile (which was there for the whole service) on the face of the vicar, who led and joined in our service. The various parts of the service included a sketch played excellently by some of the youngsters, suitably dressed for the occasion which included a fearsome dragon, a valiant St George, and a beautiful princess.

Everyone joined in the hymn singing, which must have been heard outside in the main road, -such was the volume.

And while we`re on talking about the music, we couldn`t have sang so well without the sterling support of the organist. Some days in our lives, we feel “down” but this wasn’t` one of them; this day accentuated the wonderful feeling we have for our movement, and made us even more proud of the day that Baden-Powell created and left us such a legacy.

A collection made during the service amounted to £300.33 was donated to the St.Oswald`s Childrens Hospice- a magnificent effort to complete our day.

While perambulating among the many in St James and St Basil`s Church, I took the opportunity to nudge a few to make contributions to Lookwide. The following came via email within a few days- and I`ve never stopped laughing since then- here it is.

DC`s Report

I am sure there are comments re St Georges Day in other parts of Lookwide. I would like to add my thanks to the organising team, and everyone who turned up to make this event such a good event. The collection taken for The Children’s Hospice at St Oswald’s was £300.33. I have obtained a large sized cheque and I plan that this will be presented to the hospice by some of our young people.

There are some changes regarding CRB that will come into force over the remainder of this year, I will give Group Scout Leaders a hard copy of the information that I have received at the GSLs meeting on Tuesday night.

I am really pleased that I have a meeting with The County Training Manager, before the GSLs meeting hopefully  to confirm, and decide on how I and the Training Advisers will work with, someone who is be proposed to be a Local Training Manager for us. the individual concerned has great experience, both as a Scouter and as a Trainer, and I am sure he will be a asset to the District.

To those going to Lookwide Marra, remember I need your Nights Away Notification Forms, email is fine, at least one full week before the event. Thank you to the CSL who has already submitted her Groups form.

We have decided that the District AGM will be held on TUESDAY 20TH MAY at 7.15pm at House on the Hill. Uniform and Awards to be worn.  Refreshments will be available.  Do not worry about seats, we have obtained quite a few new (to us) ones.  Please encourage all Leaders or people who are involved or interested to attend. This is YOUR District and it would be super to see representation from all Groups and Units.

Looking through a Church Magazine , I was delighted to see an article by an old friend of mine who was also a Scouter in days gone by. He was also at our St Georges day service.

The article was most amusing and he has given me permission to use it—so here goes.

POOCH IN THE PEWS by

FRANCIS WOOD

A guide dog is helping to lead the hymn singing at a Welsh Chapel near Llanelli. Five year old Teddy is a golden retriever and joins eagerly in the hymns but sleeps during the sermons. Mr. Jones the organist says the congregation sings more loudly now.

Teddy also loves a good Bark Chorale and changes have been made to make him feel at home. Processions are now referred to as “walkies” and at the end the minister has changed his polite invitation “please be seated” to the peremptory “SIT”.

Many thanks Francis. And it has been great seeing you after such a long time.

News from ‘Chil’

Firstly, congratulations to All Saints who won the indoor games competition and to Kingston Park who were runners up. There was a wide array of games to have a go at including bobbit and completing jigsaws with gloves on. Thanks too to the other competing packs - 1st Dinnington, 47 th Newcastle and 82 nd Newcastle for making an entertaining evening..

We entered a team into the County dragon boat racing competition, held on the Tyne at Newburn – thanks to the cubs from All Saints and Brunton Park who paddled hard in cold and windy conditions. It would be good to see this event held again.

Thanks for those Cubs who were in the colour parties for the St George’s Day parade and to the cubs and beavers that did the sketch about St George – it was a story well told. And to all renewed their promises and recited the law – well done you came out loud and clear.

Finally it was good to come and see the Gang Show – well done to all who took part and for the cub section - two cub leaders both sing solos in the gang show – well done thanks Mark and Lewis..

A message from Glynn Payne

Hi Everyone

Just to say a big thank you to you all for your hard work and effort  in making the St George's Day Service  at St James and St Basil such a tremendous success. Everyone's  contribution made it a brilliant evening.

It was a memorable occasion and all our guests appreciated  the warmth and the vitality displayed. It showed Scouting at its best, the involvement of young people guided by dedicated adults.
Well done!!

Many thanks
Glynn

(Glynn`s message puts everything in the right perspective I know that many letters and emails etc have arrived from visitors in the same vein. Well done to everyone, not forgetting the leaders who brought along such a big congregation of their youngsters Ed. ).

Newcastle Gang Show

It certainly was one of the shows that Newcastle have put on. Apart from the superb cast, the lighting, staging was very good, and the costuming excellent. If you didn`t see it, make sure that you get your seat booked for next years, or even better still, become a member of the gang,- it`s super.

Do you want to help in a good turn?

Vince MacKell has a contact in Burma, who is making an appeal for football boots. The youngsters out there are just as keen on their football as we are over here, but very few of them have got, or can`t afford new boots. So if you have any that you have grown out of or don`t require any more, please contact Vince who will arrange to collect them and help out these youngsters. Go to it.

Around the Groups

Gosforth Explorer Scouts

St. Georges Day presentation

On Wednesday the 23 rd April, members of Gosforth Explorer Scouts attended a St Georges day service at St James and Basils Church. The service presented a chance to meet other Scout groups from around the area; however it was even more significant for our Scout group as two of our members were lucky enough to be presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award by the Lord Lieutenant of Newcastle .

To achieve the award we had been tirelessly working for six months, up keeping the Scout hut grounds, metal casting and rock climbing. We experienced many high points while doing this and are looking forward to more as we undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Silver award and the Chief Scout’s diamond award. This year there will be eight members of our group who are hoping to finish at Silver and Gold level in collaboration with the Griffin Explorer unit.

Report by Paul Lindsey

Members of the Gosforth Explorer Scouts went on a one night camp on the 19th April to Scots gap campsite. While we were there, we removed a lot of the dead wood and fallen trees as part of our Duke of Edinburgh service, stockpiling it and making a huge fire as well! We also attempted some bouldering at Rothley crags but the weather was a bit on the cold side. A enjoyable time was had by all in addition to the worthwhile work done. We would recommend a visit to the campsite to all the groups in the district as it has nearby walks, climbing, a river and potential for camp fires and wide games in the dark.

Finally, I was taken to task recently by leader who told me that one of her pack complained that “Laugh with Bill” hadn`t appeared—SO once again-

Laugh With Bill

Who is it at the door? A chap with a drum- tell him to beat it!

How do you keep a skunk from smelling?

Hold it`s nose.

Why are dogs like trees? They both have barks.

Why is a football stadium so cool?

Because it`s full of fans.

From the same church magazine as Pooch in the Pews, with many thanks.
