Editorial

By the time you read this it will be March-. And what a month it is.

Here is a little poem to help us on the way.

“Spring is sprung, the grass has `riss`

I wonder where the Birdies is

Are!, there`s a birdie on the wing

But that`s absurd—cos the wing is on the bird.

At the time of writing the weather forecast is for snow showers. The gales are blowing, and I think the all our subscribers are in bed out of the cold.

I can`t grumble because they people who do write is do it pretty regularly, but this is one month where the articles are sparse..

So I think you will be getting a few more of my “funnies” to fill the pages and I hope you will be around when spring eventually gets here.

First of the funnies

Caller to RAC Motoring services.asked the following question.—

“ Does your European Breakdown cover me when I am travelling in Australia ”

Another caller wondered whether he had to change the steering wheel to the other side of the car when travelling in France .

Caller to Directory Enquiries.

I`d like the number of the Argoed Fish Bar in Cardiff ,please. The operator said there was no listing and asked if the spelling was correct.

Caller replied, that it used to be called the Bargoed Fsih Bar, but the `B` fell off.

DC`s Report

Coming Events:

Bell Boating Day on the Tyne , this is a water activity day that is being organised for the County by Walt Swann of Whitley Bay . There will be races for Cub Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts. I have booked a boat for each section and ask that we could be considered for a second boat. the cost per person is £3.50  each boat seats, 10 Cub Scouts, 10 Scouts and 8 Explorer Scouts. Please let me know if you are interested.

St Georges Day Service will be on April 23rd at St James and St Basils Church, Fenham. 6.30pm. I have asked the Scout Fellowship to be responsible for organising it, they have been in meetings with the clergy etc,  Full details will soon be with you, lets us see if every Group in the District can be represented. Can we also be looking at the sizes of Churches within our District, as it is not the intention that all Services will take place in the same Church(es).

I know many of you are getting ready for Lookwide Marra, please remember that if you do not hold a Greenfield Nights Away Permit you will need to speak to me.  Nights Away Permits MUST be completed by every Section in the normal manner and time span, I look forward to getting them.

Can I remind all Groups / Units that activities outside the District must have the correct authorisation. Sections must remember to have the approval of  the GSL for activities that take place outside the usual meeting place. Day Activity Forms are easily downloaded.

Look forward to seeing you in your various sections over the next few months.

Scots`Gap Sawmill Campsite

At a recent executive meeting, it became apparent that although the district knew of the camp site, many didn`t know where it was or the history of it. I asked our wardens of the site, if they could give a short account of it, and the following report came from Laury Badcock.. A great deal of work has recently been done by Laury, Ian Fair and their helpers, and we hope that this report will be interesting.

Gosforth District were fortunate in being given the opportunity to develop this campsite, on land owned by the National Trust for initially a fairly nominal rent.

The original tree felling and landscape works were undertaken under the direction of Norman Barritt, our DC at the time who was the prime mover in achieving usage of this very desirable are of land for the essential part of Scouting---“camping”.

Up until 10 years ago, the site was very much in demand, but sadly it as been underused lately. It is probably fair to say the Girl Guides have used it more than Scouts.

Great North District have recently funded further landscape work and there is more tree felling required to open up the area necessary due to maturing trees over the last 36 years.

For those who have not been to the site, it comprises of two separate areas, the smaller of which is often used by leaders. It is a basic site, with a water tap, paved fireplace areas and an Elsan disposal pit. The intention has always been to have the site as `undeveloped` as much a possible, considering the past frequent use.

It is hoped that the district, in particular, will make use of our campsite. Fees are £1,00 per person per night.

Around the Groups

Newbiggin Hall Group

Just thought you might like to know what the Cubs and Scouts (some of them) from NBH have been up to.

We were asked if we could help with erecting bird boxes over the Lonnen by a local bird watcher so here are some picks from the day.

The Scouts put up 14 bird boxes and 1 owl box, as well as taking part in a litter pick of the area.
