Where were you on August 1 st ???

Quite a number of us were at the House on the Hill, Dinnington and All Saints had their own celebration.

But I have had reports of much more exotic places, where members of Great North district re-affirmed their promises on that date.

Farthest-flung member was Richard McLellan who was in Peru , South America , and is seen in the photograph and report in this issue. Already mentioned by the D.C ,Chris Longfield also did his duty in Switzerland . But without belittling these events, perhaps the

most surprising was one made in Cuba . You may remember in the July issue, that I quoted that only 6 countries in the world did not have scouts represented at the Jamboree. One of these was Cuba , where scouting is not allowed to exist. But it did on that day when one of our Sea Scouts, Josh Parker who was on holiday there met up with other scouts who were on holiday at the same time, and re-affirmed their promise on the beach.

These people remembering their promises on this important day exemplified Scouting. Being on exciting holidays would have been reason to forget their Scout membership. That they didn`t, was to their own credit, and a great tribute to their leaders and district.

Also worth a mention, was the event that Newbiggin Hall group held on that day, which in its own way was unique. Reported more fully in this issue

A little “laugh with Bill”

A gentleman, who had a wooden leg, walking down Gosforth High Street, recently, was the centre of attention at his peculiar antics. As he walked down, he kept pouring a can of treacle over his head.

He was stopped by a policeman who asked him what he was doing. Don`t hold me up the man replied; I want treacle to stick because I`m going to a fancy dress party. Still puzzled, the policeman asked what he was going as. The man replied, “that`s simply answered; I`m going as a toffee apple.!!

Scots Gap

While roaming around the countryside in mid-September, I called in at the Scots-Gap camp site. The wardens have done a fantastic job; the grass was in pristine condition and looked as if it was ready for the next test match. It is open for bookings from either of the two wardens, Lawrence Badcock and Ian Fair. They, and their team deserve your support.

DC`s Report

I am sorry to hear that three of our Leaders have been bereaved recently, Angela Ryan and Helen Byers  have lost their mother, and Sue Hollingsworth her husband. I hope that you will keep them in your thoughts and prayers over what will be a difficult time for them.

It was lovely seeing the 82nd Newcastle being presented with the County Standard at the County AGM . I would like to thank Peter Jacques for putting together the DVD for the County AGM , your hard work is appreciated. Can I take this time to offer a word of warning to anyone coming to my home on a Falcons or Bluestar match day, please be aware that you will be fined for parking in the court without a permit, we have one for visitors, unfortunately Peter was in the house for a couple of minutes and the traffic wardens struck. (£30 fine)

We have been asked to put together some work to use on three at the Discovery Museum , Examples of what young people in Scouting can do, some District History and use the third for anything Scouting. Sarah Haswell and Chris Hudson have agreed to coordinate this, so I am sure they will be in touch with the full details, for manning the stalls and ideas they can use.

Westgate Community College are holding an open day for voluntary organisations and other organisations in the area, on the Wednesday of half term in October,  Is there anyone out that would like to co ordinate the day?,  it will be a good opportunity to promote Scouting in the West End of the city.  Please let me know if you are interested in being the face of Great North.

There are several camps being considered, there are specific guidelines, please do not ignore them, remember I need NAN Forms in at different times for different age ranges, if you do not know what the times are please get in touch.

Planetarium and Ice-skating events are being held in the Centre for life during January and February 2008. Any group interested should contact Chris Hudson.

The County A.G.M. this year was at a new venue, and very good it was too. Comfortable raised seating and plenty of room for displays, and a nice glass of wine at the interval. This was by kind permission of Kings School, Tynemouth . I had seen some of the Kings School productions in the same surroundings, but it was pleasant for an annual general meeting this time. With the business side of the meeting quickly and efficiently out of the way, we were treated to a display of the various activities that the districts of the county had been up to this year. The contingent which been to the Jamboree were an excellent guard of honour, and we were regaled with an excellent film of the Jamboree. During the evening, the 82 nd received their certificate for the County Standard , and Liam Walsh was awarded the Award of Merit.

Have you ever seen your group mentioned in Look Wide.

If not,why not?

If not, why not do something about it.

Photo of Rick McClellan of the 82 nd Great North. (see Ed `s notes). It looks a lovely but very lonely place. In his Email, he gave the following information--“I was in a little village, about 4 houses, called Huayhuash, in the Cordillera Huayhuash , Peru . It was about a 6 day walk and a 12 hour bus ride from the nearest town.”

Well done Rick …Ed

Josh Parker making his promise at 8.am in Cuba . When he learned from his Leader that no matter where they were on 1 st August, they should try to re-afirm their promise, he did some internet research and was disappointed to learn that there was no scouting in Cuba where he was going to be on holiday. Not deterred by this, he is seen here on the beach at the appointed hour doing his duty. Well done Josh…Ed

Around the Groups

82nd GROUP Weekend

8 Beavers slept over, 16 Cubs and 11 Scouts camped at Moor House Activity Centre during the weekend of 21st - 23rd September. The weather was good, the spirits were high and all included had a fantastic weekend. Cubs took part in crate stacking and climb and abseil. One Cub had been terrified to abseil, but he beat his fears and even managed to enjoy the experience; we have the photo to prove it!. Scouts enjoyed off road buggies and Rifle shooting as well as learning pioneering skills. The Beavers followed a theme of Cowboys and Indians, and made good use of the play area.

Three parents, Sheila, Jeanette and Eileen made up the catering crew and they did a fantastic job. Although very tired at the end, they enjoyed their experience and have already signed up for the next camp. A very big thank you to them from all the young people and the leaders.

Gosforth Sea Scouts do Pier to Pier -22nd September

A big-thank you to Andrew Robson who as part of his Chief Scout's Gold Award organised the Pier to Pier Walk. We set off from South Gosforth Metro and travelled to South Shields . We then walked from the end of the south pier to the end of the north pier of the Tyne estuary, via the Shields Ferry- a total of approx 8 miles.

14 scouts did the walk on what turned out to be a gloriously sunny autumn day. We also managed to call in on the national sea scout sailing regatta which was taking place that day at South Shields . There were some sore feet by the end and everyone was glad of the 'award winning' fish and chips in Tynemouth before we got the Metro home. It was a great day out. Well done Andrew

Newbiggin Hall Group

As part of our Sunrise celebrations we held a service at St. Wilfred’s and then a BBQ at Newburn. While there we placed a cache full of Scout stuff and logged it at www.geocaching.com  For those of you who participate in this pastime the Name of the cache is Sunrise 2007 NBH. Also over the Summer break we held 2 map reading sessions with close to 20 Cubs and Scouts attending.

Our Summer camp was held up at Whiteburnshank and a special word should go to Aidan Gibbons, Peter Frame, Sam Rowland, Connor Billcliffe and Lee Hollingsworth for their hard work over the weekend building a permanent fire base for all to enjoy when they use the cottage. We even managed to brave the midges for a while so we could have the first fire in it. While at Whiteburnshank we invested Alex Brown into the Troop.

Our Winter programme is now well under way all 3 sections are busy. The Beavers are exploring the local woods and learning all about the trees and their leaves. The Cubs have been learning about the different senses we have and how they can be fooled. While the Scouts have been learning a little about pioneering and knot work.

A good neighbour is someone who smiles at you over the fence; …...but doesn`t climb it !

I was delighted to meet many of the Cub Leaders recently at their meeting at Kingston Park . With their plans for quiz, and a summer camp next year under discussion, I felt assured that the Cub Section of our district was thriving. Sorry however, to hear that Geoff Craigs has gone from Middle School. He did a good job while he was here and will be missed.
