A news letter of Great North Scouting

Closing date for next edition

Edition 3 Issue 1

Editorial

April 24 th 2007 , about 100 Beavers ,Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and their Leaders of Great North District visited the Cairn which marked the spot where Baden Powell held his first official Scout Camp in 1908.The event was essentially to renew their Scout Promise for St Georges Day but also to give thanks for 100 years of Scouting. After the visit to the cairn, an afternoon of fun and frolics took place in Dilston Scout Camp. Regretfully, the short walk to the cairn was too much for myself, but I`m greatful to Bob Tyson who took a splendid photograph of the Cairn, and reminded me of the great day when Lord Rowallen officially opened the site and lit an enormous bonfire in commemoration - when in fact I did manage to be there - I don`t think there were so many trees then!!- and the hills weren`t so steep.

These little quips have travelled a long way. They have come from one of my nieces in Durban . Seems to have the same sense of humour as I do !!! Thanks Joanne.

From a 3 year old in Sunday School. ` Our Father who does art in Heaven. Harold is his name- Amen,

A little boy was overheard praying ` Lord, if you can`t make me a better boy, don`t worry about it- I`m having a real good time like I am`

Little Jason, sobbed all the way home in the car after seeing his baby brother christened. When asked by his dad, what was wrong, he replied `The preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, but I wanted to stay with you guys'

Mummy had invited a few friends to dinner. At the table, she asked her 8 year old daughter, to say the blessing. `I wouldn`t know what say` the girl replied ..`Just say what you`ve heard mummy say`. So the girl bowed her head and said `Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner`.

All jokes were provided by Joanne Pavel of Durban- South Africa .

DC`s Report

I would like to welcome Judy Pearson to the District Team. Judy is working with Tim on the Appointments Sub Committee Team, processing CRB and Adult Application Forms. The District has been divided to spread the paperwork load, and if you now have to deal with Judy, you will have received a letter from Tim with Judy`s contact details; if you have heard nothing from Tim, please continue to send your CRBs to him as normal.

94 Young people and Leaders were presented with the Baden Powell Walk certificate, woggle and badge, after renewal of promise at the Cairn. It was lovely seeing two Beaver Scouts from Westerhope being Invested and Helen and Christine from the 25th Newcastle being presented with their Wood Badges. Some Service Awards and Warrants were also presented. The weather was very kind, and the young people were well behaved as usual. Thank you also to the parents who came and supported their Colony or Pack or Troop.

Explorer Scouting has had another successful weekend at Whitburn Shanks, following Scout Expedition Training. Thank you to Cas and the team.

Thank you in advance to Chris (District Beaver Scout Leader) and Sarah (District Cub Scout Leader) for all of their input to the County Beaver Scout Fun Day and County Cub Scout Fun Days. Both of these days are being held within the District at McCracken Park . We look forward to seeing lots of Colonies and Packs represented

Happy Birthday to us

I`m sure that most of you do read “Look Wide” even if the only comment I receive is about the quality of the jokes. But I do hope that you will read this!! On April 16 th 2005 ,Kath Tyson took over the new district of Great North, and since then, she has never stopped working. Two years non-stop. Some people don`t let her stop—like me for instance---do you realize that she is the biggest contributor to our news sheet, having never missed an edition. So Kath, we all say “Thank you” for the mountainous efforts you make on behalf of the district-and for the example you make to us all.

Around the Groups

Brunton Park Cub Pack have taken part in various events over the last few months, including the County 5-a-side football competition, the District Flag Competition and a Mother’s Day Service at St Aidan’s Church, at which they presented the flag, did a reading, carried out the collection and distributed bunches of flowers to all the ladies!. A presentation night was held in January at which five Cubs received their prestigious Chief Scouts Silver Awards and Craig Wright was presented with the Cub Scout of the Year Trophy, having proved an excellent example to the Cub Pack throughout his time with us. David Coulson, Sam O’Neil and George Porton received Annual Merit Awards in recognition of the way in which they have upheld the Cub Scout Law and Promise. In February the Cubs helped to set up and run, with the help of many of the parents, a Table Top Sale which raised over £300 for group funds.

Having successfully completed the Global Challenge we have been working on the Caring Challenge throughout the Spring Term. This has entailed finding out about people who help in the Community – our visit to Jubilee Road Fire Station was much enjoyed and proved a valuable stimulus for further work carried out at our later meetings. Grateful thanks go to all the staff at the Fire Station who were extremely helpful and allowed as much hands-on (and feet in!) experience as possible. Top favourites were squirting the hose and marching round in the Fireman’s gigantic fire-proof boots! We also enjoyed having Steve Gutcher, a retired fire fighter, come in to talk to us about his life in the Fire Service and about fire safety in general. We are in the process of finishing off work on hazards in the home and the Scout Hut and are working towards our Home Safety Badge.

We have indulged our creative talents by making peppermint cream hearts for Valentine’s Day, a Mother’s Day gift and card and Easter nests and cards – some of which made it home to share with the family!

Gosforth Explorers go Abseiling

Gosforth Explorers had a successful and enjoyable day out at the Arches near Alnmouth. From the old railway bridge close to Alnmouth Station we learnt to set up the belay and safety systems and then went on to abseil the 25 metres from the parapet to the wooded valley floor below with a choice of two descents - either descending the bridge supports or dangling down between the spans. It was a brilliant morning out in the early spring sunshine which saw seven of the group complete the final section and qualify for their Climbing Activity Badge.

Last month, a preliminary announcement was made about the AGM. Unfortunately the date mentioned was not available. The new date is 12 th June. The venue is not confirmed as yet but is likely to be the British Legion Club as previous.

A last Funny!! Talking about “Mountainous” efforts, do you think that Kath, should on occasions ----Ev-e-rest---( have a rest).
