Brain Teasers from my niece, Joanne In Durban, South Africa

1 A murderer is condemned to death & he has to choose between 3 rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven`t eaten in six months.Which room is the safest for him?

2 A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together for a wonderful meal. How can this be?

3 Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,or Sunday?

( Work them out first, and then check the answers at the end of this page - Thanks Joanne)

Our Founder

Baden-Powell started this great & wonderful movement of ours, one hundred years ago with an Experimental camp on Brownsea island in Poole Harbour . Remember him with pride during this great year of commemorative events, and no matter where or how you celebrate, during the summer break, always consider, that without his great ideas and foresight, nothing would have happened.

From Your DC

CONGRATULATIONS to all the Young People , Leaders and Adults at the 82nd NEWCASTLE , they are the first Group in the District to be awarded the COUNTY STANDARD .  The County Commissioner will present it at the Countyt AGM,  Which Group will be next?

Can I remind all Sections and Groups that NAN Forms MUST be completed for Nights Away Activities, these activities must be agreed by your GSL and I must have received them well before the event.  Time for submitting them, is different for Beaver Scout Cub Scout, Scout or Explorer Scout Section Nights Away, if you are not sure please contact your GSL or me.  Ignorance is not a valid excuse.

I hope to see many of you renew your Promise on August 1st, please take a photograph if you are not with your section, and let us have it, then we will see exactly how far away in miles we may be, but how close in our thoughts.

Have a safe and enjoyable break from Scouting.

Kath Tyson DC

Annual General Meeting 2007

Have you watched any `good` “telly” programmes recently?- `Scouting for boys`for instance. Well for those who attended the AGM last night, they saw a programme which deserves a peak hour showing on T.V. Presentations by many of the young scout persons in Great North showed the exciting things that they had done over the past year. Gosforth explorers gave a showing of slides and video of their climb of Napes Needle in the Lake district - Central network gave an account of their explorer belt trials and tribulations in Italy - Newbiggin hall told us of their visit to Parliament and all the London sites, (you must try and see their log books of their visit), while the 82nd reported on the magic of hikingtogether in J.O.T.T. (jamboree on the trail).

Not forgetting our “ Good Turn”, Kath Futers then reported on the side of scouting, which was attempting to raise £2500 for the training of dogs for people who have difficulty with their sight.

These presentations of events (many of which had been reported in “Look Wide”) came over with more of a live reality than can be expressed in print. The excitement of seeing Scouts standing on the top of Napes Needle: climbing in the Italian Alps; and the sometimes humorous dialogue of the presenters was gripping material.(even the bar staff were watching through the grills of the bar).

Richard Gee, was re-appointed Chairman of the District, and reported that in it was proving more and more a pleasure of working within the district. The other members of the District Committee were then nominated and elected. He expressed his appreciation of the work of Jim Roebuck, who, although officially retired from the committee as treasurer, had continued with the job work involved, until this evening when it was announced that we have hope that a new appointment will be made in the near future

Kath Tyson , D.C. then presented Kath Futers and Chris Longfield with their Group Warrents, and Vince Mackell and “Cas” with their District Warrents. In her report she expressed her delight that while the County had shown an increase in numbers of 3%, Great North had increased by 5%.

The representative of the County Commissioner , was the deputy CC Gwyn McKenzie. In her comments, she congratulated the district on the efforts that all had put in during the past year, but also reminded the district that Baden Powell started a “movement” 100 years ago, and never intended it to stand still. However much we liked it with big hat and shorts, we are now looking forward to the second century, and she wished us well.

Finally, may I again sing high the praises of our youthful presenters tonight. Their reports which I featured in Look Wide throughout the past months have excited me, but to see & hear the participants live was superb. I think I`ll take out a warrant again?????.

Good Scouting to you all!

Around the Groups

All SaintsCub Scouts

There seems to have been three weeks of showers and downpours with the occasional period of sunshine in between. We took full advantage of one of glimpses of the sun for a trip to St Mary’s Island . It poured down on the way there and it poured down on the way back but whilst we were actually on the sand we enjoyed a glorious golden summer evening. The cubs had a great time collecting shells and stones (they have yet to discover what I plan to do with them). The best sandcastle competition ended up being the deepest hole competition, there were about half a dozen different species of birds to watch and the outgoing tide had left a grand collection of crabs, minnows and sea anemones in the rock pools.

I only remember one full weekend of decent weather since Easter and thankfully that was the weekend of the cubs’ camping trip to Dilston. We are very grateful indeed to Cate Watson of the 82 nd who stepped in at the last minute to help out, to the parents who cooked and cleaned, who spent the weekend tending fires, and seeing to all of those other jobs that go with having 25 cubs under canvas. To celebrate 100 years of scouting we decided to go back to bush craft, fire lighting, camp fire cooking, building shelters and tracking and trailing. And for those of you who know Dilston, the new toilet block is a huge improvement on the old – although I never did venture into the boys toilets, the girls’ facilities were quite scruffy enough.

Back in Gosforth, the rain held off for the Group BBQ, and it was such a shame that it didn’t hold for the Cub Fun Day at McCracken Park . But in the words of The Cat in the Hat…..’I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.’

Gosforth Sea Scouts

went to the County Activity Weekend - Powburn 8-10th June . Thanks to Paul Henderson ACC Activities for another great weekend. The weather was excellent. Some scouts camped and others stayed in dormitories, all had a great time (except for anyone sharing a tent with Jerry!) Activities included a night hike, mountainbiking, rock climbing and crate stacking. As usual the ford crossings proved to be the most fun.

 8-10.6.07 Powburn 017

(It`s fun getting wet, isn`t it? Even if it is your summer holiday)

Thanks also to Paul's team of helpers who gave up their weekend to run the activites and keep us all well fed. Congratulations to Dean who celebrated his 14th birthday and final scout camp on the sunday. Dean was given the bumps in the river, and his father was holding his left leg at the time! Congratulations also to Nick Partington, 'Scout of the Camp'.
