From Your Editor

After a hectic month of personal activities, ending in a weeks holiday, I`m now back in the groove. Many thanks to all who have sent items in-you have left very little room for DC`s and Editors notes- but like I`ve said before- “That`s great, Keep `em coming.

A Grumble

I spend a considerable amount of time on Lookwide, in preparing the notes etc that come in from leaders, and it annoys me to hear, that sometimes those leaders have not received their copies. Mostly I deliver them, but on occasions they go to GSL`s direct from their meeting. PLEASE, PLEASE make sure peoples efforts are not wasted!!!!!!!!!!!!!

laugh with Bill.

An old age pensioner in a fish shop, asked for a bag of chips. The assistant replied

“ 59 or 99?” He replied, “Oh pet if you`re going to count them, I`ll just have a pie!”

I started out with nothing, ---and still have most of it!

in court a Judge asked a thief “ Have you been up before me before?” The thief replied “I don`t know your honour- what time do you normally get up?”

What do you call a pig with three eyes? A piiig!

Great North District Cub Scout Camp at Dilston September 2006

Just under 100 children and about 25 leaders participated in this event, some opting for 2 nights and others just joining later for one night. There were also 11 cubs from Brunton Park who came for the Saturday afternoon.

Packs represented were 1 st Dinnington, 25 th Newcastle, 47 th Newcastle, 49 th Newcastle, 82 nd Newcastle, West Gosforth (Montagu), Kingston Park and Central Gosforth – Middle School and All Saints.

As 2006 marks the 90 th birthday of the formation of the cubs section there was a party theme. This was marked by a very large party with games and cake on the Saturday afternoon. Games included Brownsea Islands , musical chairs and the mars bar game. Two enormous cakes were baked and supplied by Greggs and an anonymous male leader displayed his talent for sugarcraft putting the finishing touches to the decoration of the cakes.

On Friday there was a ‘ midnight hike’ by torch light with some present confusing the Hexham chipboard factory for a raging inferno. The cubs all participated in playing a part in learning how to put up a tent, some also learnt some tracking, compass work or mini pioneering and camp gadgets.

A barbeque tea was cooked as packs on Saturday. Otherwise we were ably catered for by Geoff Moyle from Whitley Bay district and for the 2 night participants by Aileen duck for the first night. Florence and Fred Nightingale (aka Eric and Lorraine Brown) provided first aid cover accompanied by their ex London ambulance.

Bob Tyson provided rousing leadership for the campfire and many others contributed with songs and sketches. Chris Hudson was our guest leader for the Scouts Own on the theme of birthdays and celebrations. The camp was not complete without some taking a paddle in the river.

There were 3 packs represented that were not present last year and three others who were not present this second time. Lets hope for a desire and ability for everyone to participate in out next district camp. Many leaders as well as cubs had not met before and new friendships were made. Some interesting examples of camp dress were exhibited by some campers – hats, shorts and great coats!

All who attended left with a souvenir neckerchief as well as in much need of a bath.

My thanks go especially to the others who set up and carried through this camp – Steve and Aileen Duck, Geoff Craig, Helen Byers and to all participants – leaders, parent helpers and not least Cubs.

Around the Groups

All Saints Cubs

During the long summer evenings we explored Jesmond Dene, the Derwent Valley , and Newcastle Airport . We even had a pack photograph beside the Police Helicopter.

In between times, we turned the Church Hall into a virtual computer network, testing and e-mailing. Help from many parents in all these activities, are much appreciated.

We decided to test the cubs pioneering capabilities with a grand wet sponge war. The cubs had to design and construct their slings and catapults and some of the dads entered very enthusiastically into the competition. The Cubs aimed some of the devices at Akela-they scored two direct hits but it was such a beautiful warm evening she wouldn`t have minded if more had reached their target. We then gorged on marshmallows toasted on the camp fire, and as a contribution to healthy living, washed them down with fresh fruit juice

Brunton Group Camp at Dilston

The highlight of the Summer term was undoubtedly our group camp at Dilston which took place over the very warm weekend of 16 th and 17 th July. You may have read the article in last month’s Look Wide written by Joe Lyndsey, one of the ten Gosforth Explorer Scouts who, together with their three leaders, helped to run activities for 25 of our Cubs.

The focus of the camp was the Adventure Badge; the Explorers and their leaders ran activities to revise or introduce skills such as tracks and trails, compass work and map work. The Cubs then needed to use these skills to find their way along a route which doubled as their second outdoor expedition. They were also taught how to light different kinds of fires for cooking on. Other fun activities included learning to play Ultimate Frisbee, challenging the Explorer Scouts to a game or two, designing and building miniature rafts which were raced in the river, performing stunts and singing at the traditional camp fire on Saturday evening.

All the Cubs had a brilliant time and are very grateful to the parents, Explorer Scouts and their Leaders who attended and supported the camp in so many different ways.

Fantastic Days out for the 25th

The 25th Newcastle Cubs had a fantastic 5 day Pack Holiday at Seahouses with the Brownies.  The weather was hot and sunny.  We went to the Farne Islands to see the sea birds and seals.  No-one was sick!  Another day was spent at Jedforest Deer Park where we saw lots of deer and a falconry display.  A day on the beach was interesting because there were so many caterpillars!  A most enjoyable holiday for children and adults too.

The District camp was a super occasion; it was very well organised with non stop activities.  Thanks go to Sarah, Aileen and Steven, Jackie for the 90th Birthday Party, the cook and all the Leaders.

58 of us had a lovely sunny day at Edinburgh Zoo travelling by train.  THe train went via Carlisle as the track was being checked - 3hours!  The zoo was great then we had an hour delay as our train was stuck somewhere.  Seat reservations were cancelled so getting 58 of us into one carriage was fraught with difficulty.  Phoning parents kept us busy and there was no buffet car for a cup of tea!  We met at 7.45am and were collected at 10pm a rather longer day than planned but most enjoyable
