Edition 2 No3

From Your Editor

The handsome bloke in the photo last month must have had you all guessing- it was Malcolm Landreth. Still canny looking now- isn`t he?

I must apologise for surprise I give to most of the leaders last month. I keep two or three sets of addresses on my computer, and unfortunately, in sending out the email version of June Lookwide, I hit the wrong button, and it went out to my Great North Leaders list in error.

Due to the close proximity of camp, holidays, and days away, this will be the last Lookwide before summer. So remember all that you do during August, and let me have all the notes about your holidays by the 25 th August. The next edition of Lookwide will be the September one. September is going to be a busy month for me, with my brother and his wife coming from South Africa to visit me, and also my own holidays to fit in as well.

I`m glad to see the weather has improved at last- let`s hope that it stays that way.

To all of you. I hope you have a lovely break, and come back in September to get ready for all the exciting things leading up to our centenary celebrations in 2007.

Laugh with Bill.

Rip Van Winkle, (so the story goes) was asleep for 100 years, when a woman found him. She said, “Rip, Wake Up”. Rip opened one eye and said “Just 10 more minutes”.

A young daughter answered the door to a salesman. She called out “Dad, there`s a salesman at the door with a bald head.” Dad says “Tell him to get lost, I`ve already got one.”

The same young daughter answered the door to another salesman.

She called out “Dad there`s a man at the door with a bald head who says he went to school with you”. Dad says “Tell him to get lost,- I never went to school with anybody who had a bald head”.

O Bob Green O

It is with sadness, that we heard of the death of Bob Green on Saturday 17 th June, 2006 .

Bob has a long history of service to the Scout Movement. Service as a scouter with what was then the 88 th Newcastle (now West Gosforth ), as a valued member of Gosforth District Executive, a Trustee for Gosforth District for many years, and as vice President. We will greatly miss him. Our thoughts go out to his wife Margaret and family at this time.

DC`s Report

I was delighted this week to receive the formal registration document saying Newbiggin Hall Scout Group was a Group in its own right. I was please to receive this on two counts, one that it means we have 14 Groups in the District, but also that I remember supporting this Group about 30 years ago (or it may even be slightly longer) as my brother was a member of the Cubs and Scouts on Newbiggin Hall, and I also occasionally speak to his Akela who still lives near where they are meeting.  We are also hoping that a new Explorer Scout Unit will be established at Dilston Road Methodist Church . the Partnership agreements are just about ready to be signed.

Congratulations to David Donisthorpe who has been awarded his Wood Badge.

Several of our Leaders have had problems with their health recently, I would like to wish Dianne, Denise and most recently Marion, a swift recovery to good health.

My final wish is that you all have a good holiday period, where you continue to run section meeting or have a break, and I look forward to another productive year of Scouting in Great North starting in September.

Kath Tyson.

Congratulations

A Little Anecdote from Bill

Reading about the appeal by Brunton Group (below) for helpers in painting reminded me about painting the HQ of my old group –the 7 th Gosforth.

When the HQ was newly built, the Scouts were busily painting it ready for the Official Opening. It was a very hot day, so when the ice cream man came round, yours truly went out and bought ice lollies for all .Even then, they carried on painting until one of the lads made a moan. His lolly was stuck to the wall, and the paint brush was in his mouth

Big Ships

In these days of travel by aeroplanes and cars, we sometimes forget that there are still big liners around the world. To those interested, I understand that the Queen Elizabeth 2nd will visit the Tyne on Sunday 17 th September.

Around the Groups

Newbiggin Hall

In the District which was once Gosforth, the group known as West Gosforth consisted of sections which met in the West Gosforth HQ in Kenton, and also sections which met in Newbiggin Hall.

At the time of writing, the sections at Newbiggin Hall now operate as a separate group and I understand that the necessary documents are on the way from Scout H.Q . Jimmy Gibbons has been a good supporter of the Goss and now Look Wide, and the following note from him, concerns the work of all who have helped.

First, we must say `Thanks` to all at West Gosforth for the help and support they have shown over the last couple of years.

Our new necker will be half and half Black and White .

On a personal note, can I just take this chance to thank all of the Adults that have been involved with NBH over the past 3 years. Without their support the idea that a couple of people had would never have taken off. From that first night, right up to the present, a small dedicated group of adults has fought, struggled and most importantly succeeded in re-establishing Scouting in NBH, Without the help of Debby, Sue, Brian, Alan, Susan, Jacquie, Katrina, Neil, Kevin, Karen and Dennis, we would not be able to offer the youth on NBH an alternative night and weekend activity. My thanks go to them all but I do not want to forget the Scouts themselves from the very first day and in all weathers, 3 changes of venue, 3 changes of day they have come and brought their friends to join in the fun as well. Thank you to each and every one of the leaders, - maybe some thought that we wouldn`t make it, but they did.

NBH is 3 years old,(note the pattern)- here`s to the next three and the….`

Ed- And so say all of us,-congratulations and best wishes for the future

Brunton Park Group

Many parents from the whole of Brunton Park Scout Group have worked hard over the past few months to clear out, paint and make new curtains for the Scout Hut- it is transformed and a pleasure to be in. grateful thanks to all those involved. We now urgently need parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends etc to tame the overgrown garden and start on outside paintwork- do let your leader know if you would be interested in helping with this over the summer

Swimathon .

Seven Cubs took part in the Rotary club annual Swimathon on 13 th May and swam 192 lengths between them in one hour. They raised nearly £125 for charity

Cyclist Badge

The Cubs have worked hard this term on learning their Highway Code, looking at safety aspects, route planning and bike maintenance. With well maintained and sparkling clean (?) bikes, 37 of us, including Cubs, parents, brothers and sisters and helpers, then set off one hot and sunny Sunday afternoon to cycle from Newburn to Wylam. We had a great time, stopping off for ice creams and drinks at Wylam and Stephenson’s cottage en route. The Tennant family were the winners of the family quiz by a whisker

Central Gosforth Middle School Beavers

We have been very busy BEAVERS!!!, and are still working HARD and having lots of fun doing lots of activities.

Reports by Veronica McKell

Pleased to hear that you`re all BEAVERING away. Ed

Newbiggin Hall Group

Newbiggin Hall Scouts, Cubs and Beavers all spent a day up at Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle .It wasn`t just a day trip out in the sun- there was also badge work to be done. The Scouts spent a very unproductive day fishing, but still managed to enjoy themselves in the rock pools and sea. Meanwhile, the Beavers went hunting the sea shore looking for crabs and other stuff in the pools. The Cubs looked at how we impact on marine life and also went hunting in the rock pools. Later on we had a game of rounders-it was the Boys(men) v Girls (Women) somehow even though the boys hit more balls and had more on the team. The scorer who happened to be a girl decided they had won by lots and lots of points. Luckily we had brought burgers and sausages with us so we had some food for the BBQ,-no fish though. The last discovery of the day was that Beavers are immune to cold. It seems that the younger you are the less you feel the North Sea chilling your limbs.

Following on from the trip, a good number of badges were gained

Holidaying in Scotland

Derek Moffett (Benton Chairman) recently returned from holiday in Scotland , and while there noticed a peculiar house name. Many names are in Gaelic and he thought at first this one was—what do you think?. The name of the house was `Cnoc Ard` Still puzzled? Keep repeating it. Clue is - “Was the owner hard of hearing”
