From Your Editor

“ A happy New Year to you all.”

Words often repeated, but without much thought behind them. But without doubt they are a wish for a future unknown,- that the person to whom they are addressed, may be blessed with happiness and joy, and above all good health. That is my wish to you: - and the scout groups to which you give so much support- may they prosper and succeed under your leadership.

It may be difficult at times, but keep smiling and all will be right!!

Do you have the right equipment? Have you suitable navigation skills? Do you know how to fix mechanical problems en route? How would you fix a snapped chain…?  Where would you use a Leechie on a bike…? Should we take a GPS?

DC`s Report

It is a new Year and an opportunity for us all to look forward to a productive and active new year within Great North District.  I would like to sincerely thank all the Leaders, both uniformed and lay, Parents on Rotas, members of Group Committees for all you have done for Scouting in the past and all that you plan to do for it over the next year; your work with our Young People is appreciated.  I would also like to thank the Young People of our Movement for the enthusiasm and achievements that they have achieved.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Scouts from West Gosforth who have recently received their Chief Scouts Gold Award at Trinity House, which was presented by Her Majesty`s Lord Lieutenant. I look forward to reading a report in Lookwide from some of the Young People who achieved this the highest Award in the Scout Section.

Congratulations to Liam and Imogen Walsh; their second daughter, Fiona was born on New Years Eve, I am sure Isobel will enjoy having a little sister to play with in the future.

Congratulations also to our Former County Commissioner, Peter Nicol who has just been appointed Deputy Chief Scout. Many of you will have met him on County Training Courses. I have passed on the congratulations of Great North District at this delightful news.

We are planning a First Response Training date at the end of January- beginning of February, please ensure you have up to date First Response Training. If you are interested please let me know, so I can ensure you get the details as soon as they are confirmed.

HELP NEEDED .... I had a telephone call from a man in Aberdeen asking about the 1st Lemington Scout Group, especially if you camped with them at Cove Bay in the 50s. If you were involved in the Group or knew anyone who was, please get in touch with me. Aberdeen are trying to get background to a plaque which was presented to Cove Bay by the 1 st Lemington.

“O, Come all ye Faithful.”

In the season which has as its centerpiece the Christian festival of Christmas, I wonder how many times these words are spoken and sung. Just for me alone the count would make a considerable total. My favourite radio programme is Classic FM and I must have heard it at least three times a day for a fortnight.

It then made a `Hit` at the Schools Christmas music concert at the Sage, and again at the Christmas Concert at All Saints in Gosforth.

It appeared again at Ford Carol Service and again at Dinnington Cub Carol night in their HQ at Dinnington. All were delightful evenings but I enjoyed Dinnington the most being our District because the theme of their service brings us nearer to the true meaning of Faith & Christmas.

For a number of years now, they have had a direct link with Bethlehem through their local church, Dinnington and help to continue the work that Christ started, with donations and money-raising to help the poor and needy of Bethlehem . The local priest told me that in Bethlehem , there is a scout group-which has a membership of 428 boys and girls, many of whom have medical problems, which are expensive to treat. The money raised in Dinnington go towards helping these youngsters. It requires a great amount of love and attention by the clergy and workers in these dangerous areas, but they in turn have a great amount of faith. Well done Dinnington- keep up the good work.

WANTED

News, Adverts, Articles, from Leaders, supporters, Beavers, Cubs Scouts, Explorers, Anyone.

I recently went to a group Carol Service. In helping to put the chairs out, I discovered two heaps of “Lookwide”- of the November and December editions; the exact numbers issued to the Group. So I was cheeky enough to put them out on the chairs with the carol sheets. Amazingly, they were soon being read by the parents who came in early. Cubs were soon asking why they were not mentioned, parents were asking why the group wasn`t mentioned.

And another amazing thing about it, I do get support from the group with quite regular entries.

LOOK WIDE IS PUBLISHED MONTHLY, FREE, FOR EVERY MEMBER OF THE GROUP.

Now nobody knows better than myself that scouters have a big job-an enormous job- they spend hours on programme preparing, scouters meetings, and the pay they get for it goes up each year by 10%. Seeing their basic is £0. it`s not hard to work out what the rate is for this year. Likewise, I spend hours preparing Look Wide to support all groups on behalf the district, and like anyone else, I hate to see my work wasted. So what about giving YOUR group support. Your leaders will appreciate any offer of help, even if it just means distribution of Look Wide. And what is more important, the young people of the groups may be lucky enough to see their group and their names in print.
