Edition 1 Issue 9

From Your Editor

I must have been suffering from a surfeit of Christmas pudding last month because I rang the bell twice ??(--clangers!!) in the January issue of Look Wide. First, I omitted Kingston Park from the list of those who had sent in articles. They should have been there with a total of 3.

Then, I am not sure whether I promoted or demoted Andy Castling when I noted him as ADC Explorer Scouts. He is, and should be DESC. It`s a good job that I know that now, or I may have thought he was the new Treasurer- he likes to be called Cass- that would make him Cass-Desc. (Cash Desk??) Never mind, sorry to Andy and Kingston Park and to you all for my pun.

Terrible puns aren`t they? Never mind, read on, if we are lucky, we might find space to put a few more Christmas Crackers---UGH!!!

Laugh with Bill

Some Cwismas Cwackers from Bill- smile with me!

When a man works many hours in his garden, what does he grow? ….Tired !

Why is a tennis court always noisy?

Because all players on it are raising a racket!

A bakers shop in Wales is called

“Burns- the Bread”

World Vision

Under the auspicious of the old Gosforth District, a boy by the name of Robert Ouko in Kenya was sponsored by them through World Vision, and I understand that the new district will continue that sponsorship, Every Christmas, we receive a card from Robert sending

us greetings, and we also get an information leaflet about how Robert is getting on at School. He is now 13 years of age.

I have been to South Africa twice and once to Lesotho where children beg –not for money but for sweets. Money is no use to them as they have no shops, but sweets are like gold to them. They are fantastic children, lovable, but living in poverty. They deserve our support.

Congratulations

Some Topics from the District Executive Meeting .

A number of topics were raised which are interesting.

  • The official registered name of the district is “ Great North District Scout Council.” This should be used on any official business correspondence which concerns directly or indirectly anything appertaining to the district.

  • Centenary Badge;- the committee decided that in keeping with the centenary celebrations, the badge will be issued free in quantities which will match the censes returns for this year. Any group who have already purchased badges prior to this notice, will be recompensed.

  • District Photocopier. Prior to the amalgamation of the new district, Gosforth district had a photocopier which was available for all groups at 2p per side of A4 inclusive of paper. This facility is of course extended throughout the new district. Copy of what is required should be either posted or sent by email to Bill Moon who will have them ready in 3-4 days.

  • The committee were informed by the D.C. that the Medal of Merit had been awarded to Angela Ryan

DC`s Report

CONGRATULATIONS this month go to:

Jonathan George from the 74th Newcastle Scout Group, who has completed all the elements of his Queen`s Scout Award, we are delighted at having another Queen Scout in the District.

Angela Ryan, the CSL from the 25th Newcastle , who has been awarded the Medal of Merit, it will be awarded formally at the County St Georges Day Presentations.

Di Middleton, the BSL from the 49th Newcastle, who I was delighted to present with her 25 years Service Certificate and Badge.

THANK YOU to my Colleague DC from Newcastle East, he was contacted about computers before Christmas, and kindly thought of us, several of our Groups now have computers for use in their buildings, there are still some left for us to give out.

EPIPEN TRAINING. Brian Smith has arranged for the following training to be given in the District, the date is March 15th at 8.00pm . Venue to be confirmed. If you have a member of your section who is allergic to nuts etc, this is a valuable session for you to attend. It is open to anyone who is interested, and will count towards the time spent with ongoing learning. The lady leading the learning is a healthcare professional (not connected to Scouting) who does this type of training in her everyday job. There is no charge for the session, but to ensure we have a venue suitable, please let me know if you are interested in attending. The more the merrier.

FIRST AID TRAINING dates will be planned and published with the next Look Wide, it is important that everyone has an up to date qualification, please make every effort to attend. The venues are likely to be in different parts of the District, of course you can attend at any venue at a date suitable to you.

Now that the winter nights are shortening and the days becoming longer is it not time to start thinking about outdoor activities?

It's time to clean down the bike, blow up the tyres and check it over in anticipation of off-road rides in the countryside.

Do you know what to look for when checking the bike out for that ride out in
remote country?  Will it still work after it was thrown in the back of the garage / shed covered in last years mud and grime...?

I'm already planning to assist one group to get ready for mountain biking this Spring. Navigation and mapwork is also planned for expedition training so come on clean down the bike, dig out the walking boots and line up something outdoors in Northumberland.

Some dates for your diary;
15th February County Explorer Meeting - 2 representatives from each unit could attend
24-26th February Caud Marra Camp
10-12th March Winter Expedition Training Weekend - Seathwaite, Lake District
7-8th May County Activity Weekend - Powburn, Northumberland

If you want any further info you can contact me via County Office or give me
a call on 0779 5290378.

Brunton Cub Scouts Presentation Night

At the last meeting of the Autumn Term we held a party and presentation night. After the Cubs had played games the parents were invited in to share some seasonal food and drink.  Presentations were then made of Merit Awards to Jack Cornell, Andrew Lisle and Craig Wright who had all been an excellent example to their Six over the past year in the way in which their behaviour and attitudes reflected the Cub Scout Law and Promise.  James Coulson was
awarded the much coveted Cub Scout of the Year - unfortunately for us he has now moved on to Scouts and will be greatly missed!

Article from Matthew Fletcher West Gosforth Scout Troop

On Thursday 1 st December 2005 at 5.30pm , I was playing in a brass band from NEMCO (North East Music Co-operative). I was a bit shocked when I found out that I had to play in front of the Lord Mayor and Mayors of Bergen ( Norway ), and the Lord Mayor of Newcastle ! They were all wearing feather hats and big fancy robes. One of the was carrying a mace!

There were photographers reporting back for The Chronicle and The Journal .The whole purpose of doing this was to thank Bergen for the 20ft high tree from Fana Forest. To do so, we played Christmas Carols for them. Afterwards, everyone had mince pies and hot mulled wine. There was also crisps and juice for the little ones.

Well done Matthew- It’s good to know that there are still young musicians around (although you don’t say what instrument you play)

Central Gosforth Group

Over 60 cubs, beavers, leaders and their families from Central Gosforth finished the Autumn Term with a Friday night out at the pantomime.  Amongst the choruses of Oh Yes, He Did and Oh No, He Didn't, the loudest roars of all from the members of the Scouting Association was the scene in which the Prince kissed the Princess and all of our boys and girls shouted urgghh!

News from Newbiggin Hall Cubs & Scouts as follows .

All the Cubs & Scouts had a trip down to the Planetarium in South Shields where they spent an informative and interesting evening learning about the constellations and the planets in our solar system. Even the Leaders present now know how to find the great bear or Plough. One or Two of the Cubs are now hoping for Telescopes from Santa this year because of the trip.

By the way can I just say I didn`t get us lost this time Skip was leading and he was upholding a Newbiggin Hall Tradition, it is the very ancient tradition of going a different route then popping in to a pub to ask directions. So any of the Cubs or Scouts who think we got lost we did not it is a custom for us.

We had our Christmas Party and invited The Cubs from Westerhope over to join us, this is the second time since we became Great North that Newbiggin Hall & Westerhope have come together for an evenings fun and games everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and even Ian managed to win a prize from the raffle and went off happy. The Cubs even learned Ian’s version of murder ball which I am happy to say isn’t the same version as I used to play...thankfully.

By the time this is out we will have been on our Panto Trip to the Customs House in South Shields Aladdin this year.(no getting lost on this one we have hired a coach) This is a trip for all of our sections and Leaders a chance for the Section to get together as one.

Central Gosforth Sea Scouts.

We have recently had a talk from Gerry Goodfellow and Ian Morley about their experiences on the Tall Ships. It was a very interesting and well presented evening which the scouts very much enjoyed.

Ian Hornsby

On 18th January some 250 relatives, scouters, and masonic friends gathered in a church in Fenham to bid farewell to one of the great men of scouting. Everyone new him in some form or other - he had been scout, scoutmaster, and DC of Newcastle Cenral, Gang Show performer and helper and a good mason. I never knew him to have a wrong word to anyone, always ready with a swmile, never a grumble about the illness he had fought with over the last 10years or so.

A guard of honour of old scouts and gan show personnel met him at the church and were there to lead him out on his last journey. Please think about him for a minute or two, and his lovely wife Minnie.
