Edition 1 Issue 4

From Your Editor

I`m Back—are you? So much has been going on, that I wonder if I`ve been away.

Oodles of articles left over from July edition, which the writers gave permission to withhold. Then I had family members over from Durban South Africa and took them all over the North East. There was the Tall Boats visiting the Tyne . I saw at least one leader of the Great North District as she left Newcastle Airport for Canada . There was the Sunderland airshow. And apart from that glorious stretch of weather, when I managed to get dehydrated, summer hasn`t been to good, has it? And to crown everything, we got really hammered by the Aussies in the first test.( although as I write this, we are not doing so bad on the first day of the 2 nd Test).

And what about all you folk out there. Where have you been for camps, sleepovers, visits etc. If only one report comes in from every section , we would have to have 12 pages of Look Wide. Do you know that if it wasn’t for a report by your D.C. we still would not know that we had a Queen Scout in the District. I am proud of that fact!!! Surely someone in the group must also be proud of that achievement. So out with your notebooks and pens and let me know of these things. Look wide has a wide circulation. We also have at least two web sites in the district, which will give us greater publicity. They will be absolutely useless without your input. Please get cracking.

From the D.C. Sunday July 10th.

I am sorry to have to let the District know of the death of the Mother of Veronica Mackell from Central Gosforth Scout Group. Veronica`s mum has deteriorated over the last few weeks, and I have sent a Condolence Card from the District. Our sympathy is extended to Veronica, Vince and the family at this very sad time

Our love and sympathy go to Ann Adcock whose husband died in August. The funeral of Des took place in St.Matthews Church , Dinnington on the 22 nd August.

I would like to congratulate the winners of the Beaver Tall Ships Day Collage competition….. All Saints Beaver Scout Colony of the Central Gosforth Scout Group. The standards were very high. Great North entered some really good quality collages. My congratulations go the Colonies.

Note from Stephen Barnes.

Any Leader who would be interested in taken their section climbing can now contact Tony Read on 0191 2423663. Tony has been an Assistant Explorer Scout Leader with the Griffin Explorer Scout unit and is now hoping to use his skills in helping all members of the district.

More from the D.C .

I`ve already congratulated the winners of the Beaver Fun Day at McCracken Park , for their collage of the Tall Ships. Guess what their prize was,-- a visit to a Tall Ship. I am sure that the young and not so young who attended had a super visit.

Well done to all those explorer scouts and leaders who faced the wrath of the North Sea during the recent Tall Ships race. I look forward to hearing from the participants about their experiences. Hopefully someone may have sent in an article for Bill for Look Wide.

Coming events.

8th September Group Scout Leaders meeting 7.30pm at House on the Hill

VJ day Celebration

Sixty years ago, the long years of warfare of World War 2 came to an end with the surrender of Japan . There are many who remember that day, as being the day when the terror of being a prisoner of war finished, or when those who fought so bitterly in the far east started thinking about coming home again after 6 years of struggle.

Many who did, assembled for a day of re-union, entertainment and remembrance at Doxford Hall, and what a day it was.

I was asked by Denise Gates ADC Cubs ( Blyth Valley ), if I could help in providing some of the entertainment of that day. With Helen Denton, assisting, our share in what was a very big cast of entertainers, was to provide a mini gang show.

A cast of some 50 or 60 members of various gang shows throughout the region, after just two days of intensive rehearsal, were on stage at 10.30am on the Monday morning to start the day off. The boys and girls of the cast, gave a splendid performance of Ralph Readers music to an audience of 2,600 veterans of the war. With Derek Moffett at the piano, I had the honour of conducting them through their show; one of the numbers we did was “strolling” - which along with “Crest of the Wave”, the audience automatically joined in, and gave me a personal thrill of conducting the largest “choir” I`ve ever had.

The day continued with singers, brass bands,(3 or 4 of them) British Legion and their banners, Chelsea Pensioners, and a pipe band from Rothbury.

Perhaps the greatest part of the show was when helicopters from Boulmer flew in with 2650 portions of fish and chips from Seahouses, a world record for a take-away order. Throughout the day, teas, coffees and cream scones were served to us all ,with sandwiches and cake at tea time. The whole day was organized and provided by the owner of Doxford Hall, Brian Burnie..

This is an expedition log of young people enjoying themselves?*$?. Written by their Senior Patrol Leader,- what a wonderful thing it would be if we one like this each month .Come on—who is going to be next;- now read on-- Ed

As part of our Expedition Challenge, I and four other scouts from Oaklands Sea Scouts recently went on an expedition to Hadrian’s Wall . After many months of planning and a training walk (round the town moor) we were ready. On Saturday 11th of June we met up at Regent Centre in the morning (a bit early for some of us) and got the metro to Central Station. After a bit of confusion we eventually found our way out to the AD122 ( Hadrian’s Wall Bus). We travelled on that to Chesters Roman Fort after befriending the bus driver and the old women sitting in front of us.

Before we left I had arranged with Brian (our Scout Leader) that I would text him the number of every milestone we passed. These are the texts he got on Saturday:

28, 29, blister stop, 30, 31, 31, cant find brocolita, we’re lost, found brocolita all happy now eating, 32 , 33, 34, 35, not going to get there by 5, found housteads but still no once brewed,36, 37, 38, we can see YH we’ll be there soon can someone bring Lewis a drink bottle 4 2morrow. 39, YOUTH HOSTEL!!

As you might have gathered we stopped for the night at Once Brewed Youth Hostel, not before we had climbed loads of hills got lost at least twice and passed Robin Hoods’ Tree. We had great fun staying there, we watched Dr. Who, played pool, and met some “Norwegian Lasses” who were very popular with the boys.

The Next day it was chucking it down with rain and we had the more dangerous bit of the walk with big hills and rocky cliffs, we did however like the drizzle much better than the blistering heat of Saturday. The texts Brian received this time were:

40, 42, 43, 43, stopped for a break, 43, 43, 44, stopped for lunch, 45….

I’ll stop here because we had a bit of an accident. Those of you who have walked this path will know these hills are so steep that it takes longer to get down than go up. We all devised our own method, mine was sitting down and sliding, I ended up in a nettle bush. Peter’s method was running which seemed to work OK until we got to a particularly steep hill with rocks sticking out of it. Peter was running and he was going so fast he couldn’t stop; he tripped over a rock, flew through the air, whacked his head off a rock and landed on his shoulder. It was a very comical sight until we realised he had hurt himself, so we all tried to get to him as fast as we could (without running). Then we phoned Brian who did an examination of Peter by phone and decided that he would meet us later on the path to check on him. We all helped Peter up, I carried his bag for him and we struggled on.

… 46, 47, we r at the car park…

By this time Peter had pretty much recovered but we were all absolutely soaking. After Brian had given Peter the OK it took a lot of will power to carry on.

…48, 49, passed the railway nearly there! 50, 51

We were then picked up and we had finished!!!!!!!!!!!

Round the Groups

The Cubs from Kingston Park

have just finished our own Tall Ships Race. We started at Waterford and we each drew a design on a glass and painted it.  (We took the glass home the following week when it was completely dry) When we visited Cornwall   we had to follow a treasure trail, crack the smugglers' code and find the treasure.

We docked at Cherbourg where we cooked crepes using night lights and tin cans. We called in a Dover and we each built a hovercraft and then raced them to see which went the furthest.

When we got to Newcastle upon Tyne we had to build a newspaper bridge from chair to chair with a one metre span. The winning bridge supported over 95g. When we arrived at Fredrikstad we made Kon Tiki rafts, this time in twos and sailed them on Big Waters complete with lights. When we went to Big Waters it poured with rain until just after the judging of the rafts.

After the long journey each team who completed the tasks was presented with a torch.

Newbiggin Hall

have recently made contact with a Cub Scout Pack in Ohio and managed to introduce them to the delights of the Stottie. In return we have a recipe for the Back Eye Candy A number of our Cubs and Scouts are writing to Cubs and Scouts over there and swapping stories about School and Football-maybe we will start a Toon Army Branch in Ohio..

By the time you read this, we will have taken the Scout troop rock climbing, and the Cubs snow tubing at Whickham. Our Beavers have 2 new leaders (welcome from the district to Andy and Yvonne-ed). Thanks to them our Beavers have been planting tubs up to take home and our colony is safe again

Jimmy Gibbons.

All Saints Cub Pack

ended the summer with a flurry of badges, a family BBQ for all beavers, cubs and sea scouts, organised by the Group Executive, and then a last night sports evening, where we practiced for the new Olympic Sport of Reel Rolling and for the old cub favourite of Hoy the Welly, in addition to the usual egg and spoon, sack and three legged races and, of course, one Tug of War, or even two or perhaps three!

For the autumn term we are focussing on the Caring Challenge but we are determined not to waste the last of the light nights and are planning to have great fun with camp fires, wide games, kite designing, creating and flying, and pitching the tents in preparation for cub camp.

Gosforth Central Sea Scouts

took part with other groups in the County Activity Weekend at Powburn. We went on a night hike which involved fording a river. We also got up to some mountain biking, rock climbing, crate stacking and much more. The final day involved either walking or cycling to Linhope Spout at the top of the Ingram Valley , where one of the Timeout Scouts was invested in the river. Overall the Weekend was a great success so we`d like to pass on out thanks to Paul Henderson(ACC Activities) for organizing the event and making sure that everything ran smoothly.

27 th Newcastle Beaver Scouts

We have completed a Cheeky Monkey Challenge for Leukemia. The Beavers had to throw a giant banana through a hoop 5 times while jumping on a trampoline. The group raised £303 in total. Christine Blenkinsop raised £90 herself, (which was excellent)

Well done the 27 th. An excellent result for a very good cause—especially well done Christine

The 82nd Newcastle

celebrated the end of another good year with a Family Barbeque in the garden of St. James & Basil's Church. About 150 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and their parents, with a visit from Kath Tyson DC, enjoyed a lovely evening of food, fun and refreshments. This is the third year the group has marked the end of the year with a family barbeque and it goes from strength to strength. The leaders would like to thank all the boys and their parents for a wonderful evening which raised £237 for the groups funds.

Pack News

Last term ended with a day at Akela's home when we had lots of fun. Among the activities we built Tall Ships, searched for treasure, went through the jungle and over a raging torrent then returned to our tents to cook our tea on our fires. We said goodbye to Tyler Allinson, Kyle Borley, Andrew Down, Daniel Sharpe, and Steven Evans who go up to Scouts. Calum Hemphill and Craig Bettison  become Sixers next term and we welcome James Row from Beavers.

Joint activities - Gosforth Central Beavers

June has seen us working on our Tall Ship Challenges, as well as making a collage of a Tall Ship and drawing a design for a tee- shirt.

We invited Westerhope Beaver Colony to join us for an afternoon of Fun and Fresh Air,!! doing pond dipping and following a nature trail at Big Waters Nature Reserve. Our thanks to Newcastle Ranger Service for their time in making it a very enjoyable day for all the parents as well as the Beaver Scouts.

We had a joint night with our Cubs on a Pirate theme, all came dressed as pirates ( what a motley crew ),The Captain give the shipmates orders and they had to find the treasure islands. To collect the treasure, they had to walk the plank and then they had a Pirates feast which was full and plenty.

Beaver Fun Day:

The sun shone in all its glory, plenty of pirates enjoyed playing lots of games, with a water theme, even our dads were involved in, getting into wet suits - on the hottest day of the year

Thanks to all the groups who manned the bays, we all had a great time.
