A news letter of Great North Scouting

Closing date for next edition

Edition 1 Issue 6

From Your Editor

Perhaps you will forgive me for starting my editorial with a photo, which, strictly speaking, has nothing to do with Great North District. But the 19 th Tynemouth deserve some public acclaim, which the Scout Movement often miss out on. Scouts from the 19th were chosen as the Guard of Honour for no less a person than Her Majesty the Queen during her recent visit to Tynemouth .

With them, were Scouts from the 6 th Tynemouth- all were very smartly turned out and a credit to the movement. Tynemouth District can be very proud of them.

Now back to Great North. Due to a technical problem, last months issue had two dates on the front for the closing date for this issue. Not only that but one of them was ` out of date` I have given myself a slap on the hand for that. The news sheet each month is in itself a source of publicity- many groups contribute on a regular basis- BUT many don`t. Perhaps they don`t like publicity; perhaps no one is responsible; perhaps the group isn`t doing much;- perhaps – perhaps- perhaps there are other reasons. But our heading states ` a newsletter of Great North Scouting `. Let us ALL make sure that it is.!!

An Important note from LiamWalsh

Scouts 5-a- side competition.

Unfortunately, the 5-a-side competition which was due to be held on 24 th November, has been postponed. This is due to the lack of availability in any of the many venues I have attempted to book. Therefore the competition is rescheduled to the New Year. Due to lack of availability of venues-I`d like leader`s thoughts on changing it to a Saturday or Sunday.

Congratulations

DC`s Report

TRAINING . It has been agreed at the District Executive Committee that Training will be paid for in the following way. When you decide with your Training Advisor what Courses you would like to attend, the Training Advisor will fill in a form and send it to the District Treasurer, who will arrange payment to County. The Group will then send 40% and the individual 20% of the fees to the District Treasurer. Once the Training has been completed, then the individual will receive their 20% back. If there is any problem with either the Group or Individual contributing then the District Commissioner should be contacted. Training is important, and the right of all Leaders.

CENTENARY BADGES . I have accepted, on your behalf, a proposal made by the County Commissioner that we obtain Centenary Badges in bulk. We are able to purchase them at 60p each rather than £1, a good saving I am sure you will agree. Enough for everyone on last years Census have been ordered and I will let you know when they are available.

SKILLS DIRECTORY. Everyone in this District has a skill, or knows someone who has a skill that could be useful to the Members of Great North, walking, climbing, swimming are the obvious ones, however I am sure there are lots of people who hide their talents under a bush. People who paint, cook, make models, know basic first aid, enjoy science, garden, stamp collect, juggle, etc, etc could be a great help to us. I would like to compile a Skills Directory, of those people who would be able to help out occasionally with a specific skill. This would be in the form of maybe showing Beaver Scouts through to Explorer Scouts new ideas, your hobby could be of great benefit to others. Thank you for considering offering your skills. Please contact me on kath@rtyson.freeserve.co.uk or at 26 Ascot Court Kingston Park, Newcastle upon Tyne NE3 2UQ.

PRESENTATION. I was delighted, at the District Executive to give Alan Scott, our District Secretary, his 25 year Service Award. Congratulations Alan.

1 st Man “ If I put a first class stamp on this letter, will it get to Glasgow tomorrow morning”.

Did you hear about the report in the paper which said the council didn`t want the High Level bridge any longer?

The reason was, that it was long enough already.

Round the Groups

Newbiggin Hall Group

The Beavers now have a new leader and assistant in the guise of Jackie and Katrina. Also a new Assistant Cub Leader is Lyndsey (or even Bagheera). Finally a new Assistant Scout Leader is Kevin. The scouts have Christened him Skipless, but I am sure we will give an official name over the coming weeks..

As for the cub pack, everyone achieved their book reader badge, the first time the pack has completed a badge together. By the time you read this we will have had our Annual Halloween party, and starting to gear up for Christmas.

Jackie and Katrina are making sure that the little hands of the Beavers are not idle. Did you know you cold make bracelets from Balloons? They have taken to running the lodge like ducks to water (or should that read Beavers)

Our Scouts are getting ready to put up a presentation in the local library, and they have planned a visit to the Ambulance Station

Help : Help ; Help.

A cry from the heart of the G.S.L. of the 27th Newcastle

We desperately need adult leaders for both Cubs and Scout Section. Due to family commitments our Akela an ASL cannot re-open Cubs after the holidays. Our Scouts meanwhile are struggling to find an assistant to help keep the scouts open. Cubs meet on Wednesday evening and Scouts on Friday Evening. Anyone interested could get details from Ian Weightman. Tel No 0191 241 1840

Many thanks for your consideration.

Steve Duck comments that the District Cub Camp was a huge success and those who did not go missed having a great time.

But he also wanted to know whatever happened to the underground heating

A quickie from Dinnington Cub Scouts to let us know that they are working on shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child in conjunction with DinningtonChurch..

And they tell me that they will be holding their Christmas Carol evening in December.

Report by Joyce Porter

Gosforth Sea Scouts have recently returned from the Hawkhurst Regatta. For those who`ve never been, this is a camping weekend with lots of rowing, canoeing, kayaking and raft races on Kielder Water. There were also fireworks and a campfire at the lakeside on the Saturday night. Last year was the first time we had entered and we came a resounding last place, winning only one heat of all the races we entered. This year we had a lot more success coming 6 th out of the eight groups who entered, winning a number of heats, and even winning the final of the U13 four man Coypu rowing race! Most important however was that everyone enjoyed the weekend and came home smiling—if a little exhausted. The photograph shows the winning coypu team.

Report from Brian Smith SSL.

At long last an overdue note from me!

When the three districts joined together to form the Great North district, my job took on a much wider area for distribution of Look Wide. Although I knew many of the leaders, mainly through the Gang Show, I did not know where they functioned. However a great friend of mine Fred Dunster, who used to be a leader in West Newcastle travelled around with me, and kept me right on course. In the course of which he kept bumping into leaders he knew, which surprised them. He was ASL in the 74 th where he was affectionately known as `Serge` (from his army connections). Apart from spending much time in Kielder at the groups cottage, he did a good job at district level.

Many thanks for your help Fred both past and present.

Bill Moon.
