From Your Editor Having just received a copy of district addresses, I noticed a few names which had email addresses which I didn`t have. These I have added to my email address book, and some of you of you therefore ,will have got the reminder that I send out for news for the forthcoming edition of Look Wide. In the hope that it may bring more news from the district, I hope you don`t mind getting this, but if you do, please let me know, and I will amend my list accordingly. You will now have seen 3 editions, and seen what brings most interesting reading to adults and young alike. Please don`t be scared to let your thoughts and ideas be seen,-I hope our reports will range over the whole district, and show what Scouting is doing in Great North. With the summer holidays and camps etc now approaching, there won`t be a “Look Wide” in August, but your reports of these events, I hope to see in the September issue. To everyone in the district, have a great break, camp, many days out- whatever takes your fancy, and let`s hear about them. And by the way, adults are not the only ones that can write-what about some news from Beavers. Cubs. Scouts and Explorers- you can report as well. |
Reminder - Scout Section Event. Guided tour of one of the Tall Ships As you may be aware, Northumberland County Scouts are heavily involved with the Tall Ships Race 2005 and we have Scouts taking part in the race itself. Scouts from our District have been invited aboard one of the vessels to have a look around and meet with the Explorer Scouts crewing the vessel on Wednesday 27th July from 1700hrs until 1800hrs. We have 60 places allocated and I need approximate numbers from each Troop by 9th July. Liam Walsh ADC(Scouts)

Two or three weeks ago, Bob Tyson didn`t feel too well and decided to visit his doctor for advice. As a result, he had to visit hospital for tests. These have now been taken and he will sometime in the future be receiving attention which we hope will rectify the problem. I know you will join with me in wishing him well. |

News from All Saints’ Cubs, Central Gosforth All Saints’ cubs are busy with their fitness challenge. So far they have tried orienteering (we lost none of the cubs, despite their best efforts), snow tubing, ball skills and cycling. In the Inter-Six Football Championship, Green Six came out as the overall winners and they will need to see whether they can retain the Best Six Trophy at Sports Night. Akela is exhausted but her cubs still have loads of energy, so next we are going to try swimming and Tae-Kwon-Do. Very special congratulations go to Thomas Langley who has just completed his Chief Scout’s Silver Award. For his personal challenge he helped the other cub scouts with their Animal Lovers’ Badges by designing and presenting ‘Bird Bingo’ so that we could all learn to recognise the difference between Herring Gulls and Common Gulls and between Whooper Swans and Mute Swans! And I warn you, you do have to look very closely to spot the differences ! Thomas also won through the preliminary rounds to represent his school at the semi-finals of the English Primary Schools Chess Challenge competition, which was held recently in Wales. Stephen and Christopher Hierons have each made their Promise and are awarded Membership Badges. Helen Langley CSL |
Still at All Saints. I had occasion to visit the Beaver Colony when the theme for the meeting was Tall Ships. They had a joint evening, with the Middle School Beavers. Most of the Beavers were dressed as villainous looking pirates, with the games adjusted by the leaders, keeping up with the theme. I understand that all the beavers managed to get home safely, despite washing decks, walking the planks, and swimming through shark infested waters Middle School Cubs are Back. While delivering the last edition of `LookWide` I had the priveledge of meeting up with newly formed Cub Pack at Middle School. Full of fun, and with cheeky grins on all of their faces,(like most Cubs), they were having a great time with Geoff Craig their leader, assisted for the time being, by that stalwart Vince Mackell. Great to see them back again!
82 nd Newcastle Scout Group – Cub Section I’d just like to say well done to the 14 boys who took part in the Leukaemia Research sponsored event on Friday 27 th May. Half of which (£106) is going off to Leukaemia Research and the other half going towards a pack night out later in the year. Jennifer Heslop (CSL 82 nd Newcastle Scout Group) Well done cubs!!. You would obviously have lots of fun running, but oh what a fantastic fund raise. –and for such a good cause.Ed |

Brunton Park Cub News Last term, the cubs had helped to organize a fund-raising event for charity and found out the work of the Community Police in our area. We then visited Etal Lane Police station, which was organised by P.C.Brooks, our local Community Beat Policeman. They enjoyed talking to one of the Squad car drivers, and visiting the cells! (And as you can from the congratulations page, many of cubs have gained their Caring Challenge Badge- Ed) Fitness Challenge; This term`s main focus has been the Fitness Challenge. This has included a visit from a nutritionist from Warburtons who brought a selection of products for us to prepare a healthy snack; a carousel of sporting activities at Cowgate Leisure Centre one Saturday morning in May; taking part in the Rotary Swimathon to raise money for Barnardo`s; an evening working out with one of our parents, Karen Bell, who is a qualified fitness instructor; working towards the Athletics badge and a visit to Whickham Thorns to do climbing and archery. A really action packed term. Jackie Morely. Thanks for all this news Jackie. I see you have gained the woodbadge as well, and you still find time to send in regular reports-Ed |

Be safe and be seen is the statement received from Paul Frost SL at the 49th Newcastle. He has obtained fluorescent vests for the Troop to wear when hiking. Really good news, Thank you to everyone who has had input to any of the above achieving their Awards. PLEASE NOTE recently Tim Speed (Appointments Sub Committee Secretary) has had to make several trips to the Post Office Collection Office, to collect mail which has not the correct amount of postage, please check that if sending more than one CRB and or AA form that the correct amount of stamps are stuck on, it will save Tim unnecessary trips to collect mail. Thank you Kath |
